Oyakodon ~ in Japanese Oya (Parent) & Ko (Child), served over Don (Rice), is a simple dish consisting of a mixture of chicken meat and egg simmered together in sauce served over a large bowl of rice.

Over 250 years old, Tamahide was established in 1760. Tamahide started off, and still remains, as a hotpot specialist with shamo nabe (gamecock hotpot) as their premier dish. The Oyakodon was only later invented and introduced in the late 1800s, by their 5th generation, where it took off and spread throughout Japan, thus the birth of Oyakodon.
Being an important part in Japanese culinary history, there is often a long line outside Tamahide during their opening hours. We happened to reach Tamahide slightly past 1130am on a weekday and there were already roughly 20 pax in front of us with their dining floor fully seated, with more customers piling up behind us within minutes. Despite having 20 pax in front of us, it took us only about 15 minutes to be seated. The waitress would take your order and payment in the queue, you will be asked to remove your shoes and they will but them on the shelves for you. The whole eating affair was pretty fast once you get seated, probably due to the thought of pile of customers waiting after you and the salaryman around who have to finish their lunch fast and get back to work.
A cup of chicken broth and tea will be served, both for drinking, don't worry about the chicken broth it has a clean and light taste, not the salt-loaded packet broth we know from supermarkets.
Shortly after, you will be served your Oyakodon. Silky, half-runny eggs engulfing the different cuts of chicken meat, topped over a bowl of fragrant Japanese rice. The Oyakodon does not actually have a strong broth taste to it like what we usually get elsewhere, but instead it has a light umami that gives us a heart-warming feel like grandma's cooking.
Prices we would say are pretty inexpensive for a restaurant with such fame, prices starts at 1500円, for their minced meat Oyakodon, to 3000円 for their special Oyakodon. For the warm grandmother love you get from their Oyakodon and a taste of history, its definitely worth the price.
